WELCOME
Welcome to Meridian!

Meridian, Washington is near of Forks, Washington where it faces the Pacific Ocean. Facing the south of Forks, about 4 hours away to be exact. The beaches are cold during the winter but the brave solders that are known, as the local surfers will throw themselves towards it. It is not that far of a drive (maybe 10 hours, 14- depending) of Seattle, Washington but it’s closer to Tacoma.

It’s an upcoming town, known for it’s fresh fishing; it’s granola like way of living. Although there is a Starbucks, a Wal-mart is kind of hard to find. Most people find it the perfect place to raise kids.

But don’t think it’s exactly ‘small town’. Meridian is known for it’s posh record shops (locally known Pet Sounds which has been around for years) and the up and coming cleverly known ‘The Record Shop’. Jitterbug the local coffee shop that rivals Starbucks- for if you’re in Washington, there has to be one. It holds a variety of shops, mostly locally owned. The community as a whole stands firm and very apart of Washington. But as any up and coming town it’s had a boom of youngsters, either moving across the country to discover the place or born and rose near or in Meridian.

Some reasons for Washington not having state taxes taken out of checks, for better education system and public health-care. Other can be because it accepts everyone or any background or culture.
It’s one of those places that if you wanted to reinvent yourself or discover who you are, it’s the place to come.

Continued from here.

Charlotte had taken a deep breath as she waited sitting down against the hard plastic chairs. To one side, there was Georgia and to the other side was Arden. Ms. Whitlock sat between Kaycee and Arden to avoid the stare down Kaycee was failing to give to Arden at the moment.

Charlotte knew fully it would take in no matter of time before her mother found out about the incident and want full details. That was the problem of studying where your mother gave class, immediately she knew things by connection. Your grades (Gotta do better in Physics, Charlie, since you want to get a scholarship, right?), if you were late (Babe, there’s a bathroom near the classroom, besides what were you doing that took that long?) and now being bullied would not help.

Now Arden didn’t have that, some would say she was lucky to be so free but there was a comfort in knowing their mother was there for them. Even if she was there a little too much, he principal wanted to talk to Kaycee separately and eventually he would ask for Ms. Whitlock to escort the girl to the nurse’s office and to return to her class, unless she wanted to act as defendant of Arden for incase Kaycee’s parents wanted to argue this one out.

Shifting in her chair, Charlotte placed her hands between her legs to keep them warm and out of being nervous. She didn’t want her mother barging in there and claiming Charlotte as a weak being, unable to take care of herself.

Those green eyes of Charlotte Askeland cornered to Arden where she could see her a little more clearly since she wasn’t in far distance. Everything was so quiet and she wanted to tell George she could leave if she liked, but she didn’t. Leaning in she whispered to Arden “Thank you for today… you-” she paused to take in a deep breath to offer a small smile. “You didn’t have to.” Being the fact, Arden didn’t really know Charlotte to be of that assitance.

Arden had sat herself down with little ruckus. She'd been in this office plenty of times before and suffice it to say, the blonde knew the drill. Truth be told, she was partially amazed at her own ability to get herself in to a fight before the first full week of school was even over.

It was like she had some kind of trouble attracting super power.
Worse. super power. ever.

Her nails rapped on the arm of her chair slowly, one after the other. Lost in thought, it took her a second to get a grasp on what Chuck had actually said.

Turning her head to look at the younger of the redheads, Arden just shrugged.

"Don't think twice about it Charlotte. They were being...fu-..."
She stopped herself from cursing loudly in the principle's office.
"...jerks and that kind of stuff pisses me off."

After a beat, she asked,
"You okay?"

Principal McDoogle's brow furrowed when the secretary announced that Ms. Whitlock wanted to see him. He raised a brow when he heard who exactly was in the fight. McDoogle stood up from his chair and poked his head out of his office door, calling in Paige, who brought Kaycee with her in order to avoid another fight.

The door was closed, and no conversation could be heard. Kaycee's side of the story was told to him, and then he asked Paige to take Kaycee back to class. A few moments after Paige exited, McDoogle stuck his head out again.

"Heisler, Askeland." He motioned to both girls with a swift movement of his hand. "Georgia, get back to class."

McDoogle re-entered his office and motioned to two soft chairs in front of his desk, to indicate that both girls should sit.

"Alright. You first Heisler."

It seemed Arden wouldn't get to know if Chuck was alright or not because as if on cue, Principal McDougal called her number.

Standing up, she bent over and grabbed her backpack, tucked her hair behind her ears and mouthed again to Charlotte,
"Don't worry about it."

Arden was then ushered in to the office where she sat with her legs crossed in a fashion more typically reserved for guys, in a chair she had spent more than her fair share of time in. This was the part she hated, but she didn't let him see her sweat. Instead she waited, calm as a Hindu cow for the questions to start and her punishment to be handed down almost directly thereafter.

Chuck had opened her mouth to respond but then the Principal had interrupted so her mouth fell shut as he peered his head in. Soon after Arden sat down followed Charlotte. Her steps were small and she sat down almost sinking into the chair with her shoulders slummed.

She had never gotten in trouble in school. In fact it was hard to recall whenever she had come inside the Principal’s office either to pick up papers for her mother or to receive some weird academic reward. She stared at Principal McDoogle, not an awkward one more in wonderment of what would happen now. Between her fingers she still clutched onto the handle of her messenger bag. Charlotte looked smaller then usual but it would be suspected after being bullied.

As Arden was asked to explain she turned to her, wondering what she would say. Chuck bit on her lower lip- she didn’t want Arden in trouble. She had done something good for her but then again the girl didn’t have the best reputation between the students or the teachers.

McDoogle looked between both girls as they sat in front of his desk. He closed the door with a tiny slam and then walked around to his seat. Dan leaned back, perking a brow as he crossed his arms under his chest and leaned back in the office chair.

"Alright. Speak Heisler. From the top. Now I know Askeland isn't the type to get caught up in a fight, but you dragging yourself into it? You know you're already walking the line here kid."

He stared at the young blond. Honestly, he felt bad for the kid. He knew her record, the fact that she was emancipated, all that garbage that filled her all too young life and made it hell. McDoogle also knew that he couldn't treat her any differently than the other students. So he waited.

George finally let go of Charlie's hand, but before that gave it a tight squeeze. They exchanged looks, Georgia's reassuring look would cue to the fact that she could now hear Renata down the hallway yelling as to where her daughter was now. Charlotte went into the office, and Georgia was left to stand there.

Renata came trotting down the hallway, the look on her face one of anger and concern. Anything having to do with violence against her daughter made her fierce like a mother lion to her cub. Just short of entering the secretary's office, Georgia's tiny body blocked the teacher and Renata was forced to stop short.

"Georgia, where is your sister?"

"She's with the principal mom." Georgia said quietly. The next sentence came out quieter, with her teeth gritted. "Don't embarrass her more than she already might be..."

Renata looked at her daughter with a serious look.

"...Georgia, get back to class." Georgia refused to move. Renata crossed her arms under her chest. "Now."

Never one to refuse her mother, Georgia cast her a vicious look before slowly shifting away and walking towards the hallway again. She looked from side to side, suddenly feeling lost after that kind of confrontation with her mother. After taking a deep breath she remembered she had left her bag in the hallway where the fight had occurred, and walked back to find it.

Meanwhile, Renata was told to wait outside for Charlotte, so begrudgingly, she took a seat, crossing her legs in her green tweed dress suit and waited.

Arden shrugged, she knew the possible consequences of jumping in to a fight, and she’d made the split second descision that it was worth it. She remembered being bullied, before she had learned to wrap armor around her heart and her feeling, and well, throw a punch, and seeing people hurting someone like Charlotte, who would never intentionally hurt anyone, had set her off.

“I was on my way to ditching third block, when I heard people shouting around the corner, so I took a look to see Kaycee and her goons shoving Charlotte around. They took her glasses, and though she wasn’t fighting back they insisted on keeping up with fu-…screwing with her, goading her in to fighting and talking stuff about her family.”

Her jaw set stubbornly, there was no point in lying, so the least she could do was give it to Mr. McD straight. It wasn’t his fault she was in his office so much, at the very least Arden took responsibility for her actions.

“So I got in the middle of it, and Kaycee kept pushing…so I punched her in the nose, which put an end to the fight pretty fast.”

Offering up an apolagetic shrug, Arden toyed one of her many bracelets as she looked up at the principal from behind a few strands of white-blonde hair, waiting for the sentence to come down.

Dan made a face, perking a brow.

"You know you could have lied about the ditching class part." He shook his head as he set his arm on the rest of his chair. McDoogle looked between both girls, so starkly different. He let out a sigh and then groaned.

"The rules are no violence, Heisler. Not in this school. I know you thought you were doing the right thing, but using violence..." He looked her right in the eye. "Thought you were smarter than that kid. Probably could have tore her a new one with the way you talk."

McDoogle then looked over at Charlotte.

"Are you okay Askeland?"

Either way she answered, he pushed through.

"I'm not going to suspend you Heisler. Instead I want to see you join up with a group and volunteer. Mrs. Kaufmann needs help with her after school art group. So that's where you'll be every day after school for the next month."

Arden threw up her hands when McDoogal handed down his verdict. There was no way she could do some after school art crap every day for a month. Not if she wanted to pay rent, not if she wanted to well, eat.

Her mouth opened and closed in protest, she wanted to change his mind, to beg for something...anything else, but not in front of Charlotte, so she just crossed her arms over her chest and bit her tongue, staring intently at the wall behind the principal as she did her best not to cry.

Why was she even bothering with high school? The question rang loudly in her mind as Mr. McD chattered on at Chuck. He was going to make her beg, she was going to have to beg if she wanted to stay in classes and eat.

Charlotte watched the battle of words between both of them to sit there quietly with nothing to say or offer at the moment. She saw the look at Arden’s face of sheer frustration and bit on her inner lip feeling guilty. If she had just tried and defended herself none of this would have happened but instead Arden was in trouble.

She looked down to her fingers to squeezing over her fingertips as she looked up to McDoogle with her dark green eyes, a look that seemed almost pathetic if it didn’t hold that sweetness to it. She licked her lips as she shrugged her shoulders and then brushing her hair back as she looked to him.

“I’m fine… she was just trying to help me. She didn’t do anything wrong.” She responded not knowing what to say to him that would convince him of other wise. She pressed her knees together tightly to plant her toes to the ground making her knees go up and showing she was not comfortable at the moment. Her hands went to the armrest as she looked back to him.

“I’m fine… I’m fine.”

She knew her mother was outside and if she wasn’t fine… there would be hell to pay.

McDoogle looked at Charlotte and shook his head.

"What she did was noble, but you both can't honestly expect me to just let this slide? She punched someone. That's not acceptable."

He looked over at Arden, noting the look on her face. The Mac breathed out, feeling a bit of a tug at his heartstrings and then looked over at Chuck again.

"You can go. Heisler, you stay."

When Charlotte left the room, and it was just the young blond and the graying old man, he leaned back in his chair again.

"C'mon. Out with it." He tilted his head, his face placid and his eyes still stern but there was some kind of concern on his face. "I'll take what you have to say, but you know that I can't just let this slide, so we're going to have to work together on this, alright?"

Arden shifted in her seat and crossed one leg over the other, sitting in a way usually reserved for tomboys and jocks. Her long fingers fidgeted with the laces on her worn sneaker and the pair, student and principle sat in stubborn silence for a short spell, until the blonde was certain that Charlotte and her mother were out of earshot.

"I'm not some hot-topic punk who wears torn up jeans that she paid fifty dollars for and is this skinny because she starves herself, Mr. McD, I work, two jobs, on top of trying to keep myself in school and, welfare doesn't want to help me because they really don't look too kindly on emancipated minors sooo...."

Arden drew out the last word, her tone angry though not disrespectful. It was just hard, hard for her to admit weakness, admit that she couldn't just take all the punches in stride and keep walking. Sure, she was a fighter, but everyone has their limits, everyone gets KO'ed sometimes.

"You're asking me to give up money I don't have. I already eat the free breakfast and free school lunches..."
Truth was, some weekdays the small school meals were all Arden ate if she wasn't working a shift at Triple Play.

"I'd rather be suspended, I know you're trying to do some alternative punishment take the messed up kid and set her on the right path with art or whatever...but I can't afford it. Wish I could, really do, but unless Mrs. K is going to pay me for hanging out with her art crew...can't really see it happening."

Dan nodded. Let it not be said that the Mac was not a compassionate man, although after this, he would need a stiff drink and force Mr. Evans to have one with him. He hated to see any child go without, and it was obvious that this one was struggling.

"...Weekends then. One hour a day in Mrs. Kaufmann's kids group on the weekends. Now, that isn't going to kill you now is it?"

He perked a brow, then shuffled some papers around.

"I know it doesn't mean much, but if you need assistance, please, tell myself, or one of the teachers. We can't do much, but we can try to help with whatever we can."
