WELCOME
Welcome to Meridian!

Meridian, Washington is near of Forks, Washington where it faces the Pacific Ocean. Facing the south of Forks, about 4 hours away to be exact. The beaches are cold during the winter but the brave solders that are known, as the local surfers will throw themselves towards it. It is not that far of a drive (maybe 10 hours, 14- depending) of Seattle, Washington but it’s closer to Tacoma.

It’s an upcoming town, known for it’s fresh fishing; it’s granola like way of living. Although there is a Starbucks, a Wal-mart is kind of hard to find. Most people find it the perfect place to raise kids.

But don’t think it’s exactly ‘small town’. Meridian is known for it’s posh record shops (locally known Pet Sounds which has been around for years) and the up and coming cleverly known ‘The Record Shop’. Jitterbug the local coffee shop that rivals Starbucks- for if you’re in Washington, there has to be one. It holds a variety of shops, mostly locally owned. The community as a whole stands firm and very apart of Washington. But as any up and coming town it’s had a boom of youngsters, either moving across the country to discover the place or born and rose near or in Meridian.

Some reasons for Washington not having state taxes taken out of checks, for better education system and public health-care. Other can be because it accepts everyone or any background or culture.
It’s one of those places that if you wanted to reinvent yourself or discover who you are, it’s the place to come.

[just an fyi to those of you newer to the RP - all names used and some events alluded to involve the original incarnation of the RP, and the people who helped make that RP great. I tried to put in as many people...if you didn't get in, don't shoot me]

Meridian, Washington, located on the far western reaches of the United States, was originally inhabited by various tribes, including the Cayuse and Nez Perce. Being so remote, these tribes remained relatively undisturbed into the late 18th century. The first white settlers to the region were of Russian, Spanish or French claim; primarily interested in trading, these groups left the land considerably untouched, and did not establish permanent residences. Settlement began in earnest in the late 18th and early 19th century, when the British began to claim the territory; disputes between the United States and Great Britain would continue until 1846, when the land would officially be ceded to the US.

Even from this beginning, and despite its extreme remoteness, western Washington became a popular destination, due to its abundant natural resources, invigorating climate, and cheap land prospects. The original township of Meridian was founded by a lumber company, Besner Edmond and Connolly, in 1851 to house and care for the workers at the mill and their families. Due to an advantageous location and a booming industry, along with pristine ocean views, Meridian quickly became a popular destination, and soon was its own booming town.

With Washington being granted statehood in 1889, Meridian began seeing a rise in population peaking just before the turn of the 20th century. While its remoteness, Meridian could never compete with larger cities, but it became known as a quiet alternative to the hustle and bustle of big cities. A brief timeline of the illustrious history of our town and residents is as follows.

1851 – founding of the town of Meridian. First mayor is elected, David Flynn, who will serve seven terms uncontested.
1867—the “Great Fire of 64”, in which a local schoolmarm, Mrs. Owens, singlehandedly prevented the entire courthouse and records office from burning to the ground. Mrs. Owens is commemorated in a plaque on the courthouse.
1874 – Miss. A. Ramos, town resident, founds the Chamber of Commerce, Home and School Association, and Ladies Knitting Society and Coffee Klatch, all of which continue to today, and contribute much to our grand city.
1899— Mrs. D. Ackerman, richest woman in town (and perhaps the entire state of Washington, though it has yet to be proven) passes away, leaving her fortune to the building of the town park, library, and beer hall.
1911 to 1945 – local residents valiantly give service in World Wars I and II. Among those honored on the War Memorial in the park is a soldier known only as “Reece”, who embodies the brave fighting spirit and pride of the local community.
1932 – A young lady by the name of Jade is crowned the first Miss Douglas Pine Days. This contest continues today, and a portrait of her lovely likeness hangs in Town Hall.
1951 – Meridian celebrates its Centennial by honoring the founders, erecting monuments, and reopening the town beer hall as the Yates Memorial YMCA and Community Center.
1957 – A plot to bomb a local restaurant is foiled through the efforts of Police Chief Alex, though the actual identity of the bomber (presumed to be a Soviet spy) is unknown.
1961—President Kennedy visits Meridian. Well, okay, he didn’t visit. But Mayor K. Tompkins met him in Washington D.C., and he said, “Oh, west coast? Beautiful area,” before he moved on to the next wellwisher at the US Mayor’s Conference. And that has to count for something.
1978—Local resident M Lee is elected to the US Senate. Her record, while bland, is filled with ribbon-cuttings, hand-shakings and baby-kissings.

Meridian, quite obviously, is a town filled with pride in its past, it’s residents, and its achievements. With this pride and strength in community, our town will continue on, unfettered, in its growth and achievement.
